Great story about a simply fantastic program!! To think of all those people
that received much needed free medical, dental, and eye care in just ONE
weekend by those volunteers. The final count: 920 patients seen, 500 pairs
of glasses, 94 mammograms, 567 fillings, and 1066 dental extractions-- but
400 people had to be turned away at the end of the second day. And working
on a shoe string budget with no government or corporate money?? If these
wonderful volunteers can accomplish so much, so quickly, and on so little
money, why can't our government do something????????????  You can view the

Tonight they had a segment on that if viewed, had to have moved you.  
If you care about people and care for people it had to have even  
moved you more. I can only hope you saw the segment on the  
organization that has started to provide free volunteer healthcare to  
our citizens across the USA.
They started out as an international organization providing care in  
South America, etc., but now 60% is given throughout the USA.
Their name is Remote Area Medical (REM) http://www.ramusa.org/ .  
Anyone ever work with them? They did a segment where they provided  
free care in Knoxville, TN and after working their tails off, they  
still turned away 500 people. They did interview an NP who was  
working with the group that weekend. Very positive.
I (we) would like to take the first of many steps to form a liasion  
between the ACC and REM. First I need to talk with the Board.  I will  
try to collect information. If they check out and agree, we would put  
a link on our web site and ask all NPs and PAs to donate their time  
and money. As a 15 minute segment was devoted to them tonight, I can  
only suppose 60 Minutes checked them out significantly. So, I again  
ask if you know anything about them?
So, if they have it on their web site, please watch the segment.
