[NPInfo] 60 Minutes. Did you see?

This organization has been active in central Virginia for some time. I was scheduled to do a mission trip with them 6 years ago but ended up moving and could not go. One of my good friends has gone every year and would not miss it. His wife and daughter now go with him and they are not medical but do things like set up for visits, run errands, bring supplies and act as extra hands as needed. The group in central VA has gone to Grundy, VA several times. The trip is done on a weekend, sometimes you stay in the building that you are using to see patients but if the town has a hotel, you can stay there if you want to. People usually take Friday off to pack and drive. Grundy is a mining town (coal) so much pulmonary is seen there along with dental and visual and general health care maintenance. As stated on 60 Minutes, most have some insurance but are woefully underinsured. Others have none but most are working. Most of the volunteers try to get appropriate supplies donated.

I too was amazed at the impact this group has. What was sad is that so many people came out for care and that some had to be turned away. Also, great was the comment to take away some misconception the public has about substance abuse and others in in need of services. I don't recall exactly but one of the MD's stated the people who came had no substance abuse issues & that most had insurance, just that they were under insured ~
