Hello all! I am very excited about a mini battle I just won and wanted
to share: I recently found out the academic medical center I work at has
a "policy" to place a "supervising physician" name on all labs and
x-ray's ordered by NP's and PA's "per the Medicare law." The MD name is
picked at random by a data entry person at registration, and REPLACES
the NP, PA name on the tests. 50/50 chance the ordering provider also is
mentioned. (Nice huh?) After numerous circular conversations with
non-clinical people as well as clinical people regarding the patient
care, compliance and risk management issues here, I just received a call
that the hospital will be changing it's policy to have anyone with an
NPI number listed as the ordering provider as they are now aware that
Medicare's guideline is to have an authorized provider listed. (They
were shocked Medicare doesn't make laws.....and that we do not require
supervision in our state)
One baby step at a time, one baby step at a time.......
