I am Shainy B. Varghese, MSN, RN, CPNP a nurse practitioner and educator, also a doctoral student in nursing at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston. For many years I have been concerned about the lack of research to support what we do as advance practice nurses in telehealth. For my doctoral dissertation, I have chosen to study the APRN in the telehealth environment and how we demonstrate caring when we do not actually touch the patient. I think it is vital that we question every aspect of our practice, and I need your input on this important issue about the innovative telehealth access system. If you would agree to assist me, your entire response can be done online. All you need to do is answer 12 open-ended questions, but your time commitment is totally under your control. Please consider contributing to this study to answer one of the criticisms of the telehealth environment. I need to give you some additional information so that you can be informed of your rights as a participant.
The name of the dissertation study is Perception of Caring by APNs Practicing in Telehealth, and it is conducted under the supervision Dr. Carolyn A. Phillips, associate professor at the UTMB School of Nursing and a full member of the graduate school faculty. Participation in the study is voluntary. All information about individuals will be kept confidential and only aggregate findings commonly found in the collection of data from all participants will be discussed in the report of the dissertation. I expect to present the findings to my research when I defend my dissertation during the summer of 2008. The Institutional Review Board at UTMB has approved this study. Their guidelines for the protection of human subjects will be followed at all times.
If you would like to learn more about this study and perhaps consider participating, please e-mail me at sbvarghe at utmb.edu <mailto:mmjose at utmb.edu> and I will get back to you as soon as possible via email. All exchange of information and data collection will be done using email, except the consent forms. If you are a nurse practitioner I want to hear your thoughts about conveying caring in your telehealth practice, if you have an administrative role please encourage some one to participate.
Sincerely,
Shainy B. Varghese, RN, MSN, CPNP
