I also work at a retail clinic. I do not give Rx for OTC meds - there is no reason to do so. My recommendations for OTC meds are on the EMR printout I give the patient.
When I did housecalls in asst living homes, adult foster care homes or group homes, every medication, whether OTC or Rx required a script. The homes wanted it for their records; but the Medicaid patients used the script as some of the common OTC meds are covered by Medicaid. Such as ASA, Colace, Calcium. No reason why any other patient would need a Rx for OTC meds. Waste of time for you.
What about OTC tx such as emollients (Eucerin, Aquaphor) and shampoos (Selsun Blue, Nizoral). In the group homes, these tx required a Rx too, and the home put the tx on their med sheets. That way the patient would get lotion on their scaly diabetic legs bid, and get their eczema scalp washed 2 x week with Nizoral, as I directed.
Is the pharmacist going to fill the OTC med for the patient? Go down the aisle & help them find the best med for the price? I know our pharms & techs don't have the time for this.
