The lease will be in my name but the practice, billing, etc. will be in the doctor's name since I am not an NP yet. The doctor has 2 offices on his own and he will be the medical director, see patients one morning a week to start and do some of the deliveries. I will hire 1-2 NPs to see the patients and also to mentor me for my OB/GYN part of my NP program. I know a bunch of OBs at other hospitals so that the patients will have a choice of hospital to deliver at. For those of you in private practice, how did you decide how long a lease to sign? The office is not ideal but is certainly a great deal for a startup. It's 7 rooms in 950 sq. feet, 3 of which are exam rooms. Landlord wanted $1500 a month -that includes just the water and trash pickup. He has one electricity meter for the whole complex (I think it's 8 or 10 offices total in 2 stories, so once a month he divides the electric bill by the number of sq. feet you have.He said that a dentist had the office before and his part of the bill was $95. Hmm. I don't think there was a dentist there as while there is a tiny room he used as a darkroom, the 3 exam rooms have no plumbing-I have to have sinks and cabinets added as the Dept. of Health Services requires a sink in the exam rooms. So, I asked him to help me on the monthly lease because I am just starting out, and he lowered the rent to $1000 for 3 months, $1200 for the next 3 months, $1400 for the next 3 months!! Great deal to me!! It's right in the middle of a highly Hispanic area which is what I wanted, since my office will be aimed at pregnant Latinas. I am concerned that in 1-2 years, the office will be too small. The landlord is hoping I'll sign a 3 year lease. Any recommendations? I'm also wracking my brain on picking a name for the clinic. While I was thinking of Clinica CoMadres, I was advised by my friend who will be the office manager/biller to stick to an English name so as not to alienate women who are not Hispanic.
