Hi Grace,
I'm sorry to hear that you are closing your practice. Two others near me
have recently closed. One of them never wanted to be in her own practice to
begin with, so it was wise on her part. It's a lot of hard work when your
heart is not in it. She's much happier in an employed position.
I think one of the things that one needs to be clear about is the definition
of independent contractor. People run into trouble all the time with
this.and trouble is in the form of the IRS.
I've not done this, however, I was approached about seeing patients for
someone in NH as an IC, prior to opening my office. Since I was not going to
see patients in the office, only in LTC, there was almost no overhead. I
would do my own billing and carry my own pager. The physician would just see
folks and sign orders as needed to satisfy Medicare. Regulations. In this
case, I would be keeping 100% of receipts.
In other cases, where you are seeing people in the office, you will need to
contribute to overhead (office space, staff support, etc). In those cases,
you may have to contribute 3-40% or more. It may also depend on how much
consultation you do with the physician.
I'm sure Carolyn Buppert has addressed this in her books or even in Q&A on
Medscape.
Please keep us posted as to how you are doing and what you find out.this
will be great information for other NP's at NPBusiness.

I am closing a private practice and going to work as an independent
contractor in a MD owned clinic. I plan to give him a percentage of what I
collect from billing, not what is billed. I also am curious about how I get
paid for seeing his pts and vise versa. I would like to ask others out there
that are doing the same thing what are your experiences and how did you
write up your contract. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Grace
