E. Lunchroom Precautions The following measures are currently in place: 1. With the permission of parents, allergic child to sit only at table where no peanut (or other allergens as specified by the parent) products permitted. Conspicuous table sign indicates "No Peanuts, Please." 2. Other children welcome to sit at this table, but only if they have peanut-free lunches. Classroom teacher will monitor situation. 3. The table will be wiped off after each lunch period by the head custodian with both a bleach water solution and hot, soapy water. Separate buckets and sponges will be used only for this table and clearly marked with this designation. 4. Parents of children wishing to purchase lunch should check with [food service manager]regarding menu choices and ingredient lists. We have multiple epi-pens at school for peanuts, pistachios, macadamias, shellfish, fish bell peppers and mangos. I've seen a student's face (area around the nose and mouth) develop odd sensation and some redness from the smell of fish. In the past we had an epi-pen for lentils and needed to take the lentils out of our Early Childhood sensory table. We have students with tree nut allergies who consider peanuts a significant protein source and students with peanut allergies who consider tree nuts the same way. Currently, we have not used a separate table. I'm concerned about the false sense of security given families by the fact that we don't have peanuts as part of our school provided food at our particular school. I do ask teachers to send out a notice to the students in their class about specific life threatening allergies in the class. Of course, it does not name the specific student, just the allergy. It asks the parents to consider this in providing snacks or treats for the classroom and reinforce the importance of not sharing food at school and washing hands after eating or preparing food. So... Do you have separate tables for individual foods? Do you inform parents how difficult it is to make sure rules are carefully and consistently followed? Are those student's lunch bags/boxes kept separate from other lunch boxes? Do the students feel isolated?
