POSITION SUMMARY
Provides basic mental health services under the supervision of a 
licensed psychiatrist.
Utilizes professional medical skills to meet a variety of health care 
needs, with mental health
care as the primary focus. Interacts with a variety of health care 
professionals and security
staff in a correctional environment.

JOB RELATIONS
RESPONSIBLE TO
-Psychiatrist
-Health Care Unit Administrator

INTER-RELATIONSHIPS
Inter-relates and works effectively with patients, medical and 
nursing staff, security staff at all
levels, administrative and support staff, and consulting physicians.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responds to initiates care for mental health emergencies 
throughout the facility.
2. Assesses inmate patient in a variety of settings.
3. Identifies inmate patient mental health problems, and prescribes 
treatment under the
direction of a psychiatrist.
4. Implements medical care utilizing therapeutic regimens approved by 
the psychiatrist.
5. Provides education to inmate patient, health care and correctional staff.
6. Documents all health care contacts using the Problem Oriented 
Medical Records format.
7. Adheres to safety and security policies, and participates in 
disaster drills.
8. Follows security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.
9. Delegates to and supervises other team members as appropriate.
10. Adheres to Universal Precautions and other appropriate infection 
control practices.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
OFFICE
Standard medical setting in a correctional facility.

TRAVEL
Minimal travel required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
LICENSING
Current Washington State Nursing license

CERTIFICATION
CPR

EXPERIENCE
Minimum 2 Years experience in a mental health setting.

EDUCATION
Graduate of an approved college/university program.
