The *First Line Supervisor / ED Nurse Practitioner* is critical to the 
success of St.
Joseph's Medical Center and requires the full understanding and active

CHW.  It is expected

*POSITION SUMMARY:**
**The First Line Supervisor / ED Nurse Practitioner* will have 
responsibility for
performing medical necessity determinations on ED patients being 
considered for
admission (using InterQual screening tools and documenting in Midas). The
EDNP/PA will also perform, under physician supervision, while following 
approved
standardized procedures, medical screening examinations of emergency
department (ED) patients (including ambulance patients), diagnosis of 
common
medical conditions, managing stable phases of chronic illness, coordinating
health management, and assisting the ED physician in delivering care to 
patients.
The EDNP/PA will also review medical necessity of patients admitted from 
the ED
in the last 24 hours. It is the expectation that the EDNP/PA will 
influence appropriate
and timely clinical decision making and improve ED throughput for all 
patients.
Additional tasks maybe assigned to the EDNP/PA so as to improve overall 
patient
flow in the ED. The additional tasks may include the assessment and 
potential
disposition of ED patients waiting to be seen. The EDNP/PA also may 
perform other
duties within his/her scope of practice including, but not limited to: 
ordering of
medications, laboratory tests, imaging studies, suturing, and 
disposition of patients.
This position requires providing care/service to an acutely ill, new 
born through end
of life patient population in a manner that demonstrates an 
understanding of the
functional/developmental age of the individual served. Knowledge and 
understanding
of customs, beliefs and needs of consumer group(s) served. The Medical 
Director
supervises the EDNP/PA's clinical practice. The EDNP/PA reports to the 
medical
director and the Emergency Department Director. The EDNP/PA is 
responsible for
knowing the mission, values, and philosophy of the organization and is 
accountable
for ensuring these are considered during the care of the ED patients. 
The EDNP/PA is
responsible for maintaining excellent communication and interpersonal 
relationships,
using AIDET with all patient/family encounters. The EDNP/PA is 
accountable for
effectively and positively promoting the goals of the organization.

This position requires the full understanding and active participation 
in fulfilling the
Mission of the Organization. It is expected that the employee will 
demonstrate behavior
consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support the 
Organization's
strategic plan and the goals and direction of the Performance 
Improvement Plan (PIP).

*REQUIREMENTS:*
*Satisfactory completion of a formal Nurse Practitioner Training Program 
(Physician
Assistant Certification from an accredited institution may substitute 
for a Nurse
Practitioner License, if the PA has a BSN or Masters degree).
*Bachelors degree in Nursing (BSN) or Masters degree in Nursing (MSN) or 
similar
advanced practice degree required
*Minimum of four years experience as an acute care registered nurse 
preferably in an
urgent care or emergency room setting.
*2 years experience as a family nurse practitioner (or physician 
advisor) is preferred.
*Physical ability to perform direct patient care

*LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS*
Current California RN License
Current California Nurse Practitioner License or Physician Assistant 
Certification
Current DEA Number
Current California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number
Current ACLS & PALS Certification
ANCC Board Certified FNP preferred

*REQUIREMENTS:*
Bilingual in English and Spanish, written and verbal preferred, but not 
required
