*Description*
Stony Brook University School of Medicine of the State University of New
York invites applications for the positions of Nurse Practitioner and
Physician Assistant in the division of Gastroenterology.
This position serves as a healthcare professional who, under the
direction and supervision of a licensed physician, will provide care to
patients seen at the Stony Brook Medicine division of Gastroenterology
and Hepatology ambulatory office, located at 3 Technology Drive in East
Setauket, NY. The physician extender is expected to maintain and enhance
a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice, as well
as meet the requirements necessary for licensure and certification. The
following duties will be expected:
* Care for patients with a variety of acute and chronic liver diseases,
including but not limited to viral hepatitis, cirrhosis and fatty liver
disease.
* Conduct teaching visits for patients at the initiation of antiviral
therapy, and monitoring for symptoms, complications, and lab
abnormalities for the duration of antiviral therapy.
* Complete training for the performance of Transient Elastography
(FibroScan™), as well as acquire competence in the interpretation of the
various methods of non-invasive liver fibrosis assessment.
* Assist in obtaining approval for antiviral therapy, communication with
insurance companies and specialty pharmacies.
* Conduct comprehensive or episodic assessments of patients recently
admitted to the hospital floors and/or emergency room with basic
gastroenterological disorders.
* Establish a medical diagnosis, order and evaluate diagnostic studies,
& prescribe and regulate medications.
* Assess and/or manage follow-up plans within the protocols and practice
plans approved by the supervising physician.
* Record and document health appraisal data necessary to maintain ,
coordinate and expedite required services.
* Maintain ongoing, daily communication with the physician collaborator.
* Act as a resource and consultant to healthcare staff.
* Other duties as assigned.
*Qualifications*
*Required Qualifications:*
*Physician Assistant:*NYS license and certification as a Physician
Assistant. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of Physician
Assistants.
*Nurse Practitioner:*NYS license and certification as a Nurse
Practitioner. Master’s degree in nursing or completion of a course for a
Nurse Practitioner.
*Preferred Qualifications:*
At least one year of clinical experience working as a Physician
Assistant or Nurse Practitioner. Previous experience working in
gastroenterology, internal medicine, or general surgery. Work experience
in gastroenterology with emphasis on outpatient/ambulatory care of
patients with liver disease.
